3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As a group, deciding which distributor was most suitable for "The Remembering" and which would grant most success was a difficult decision as each group member had their own ideal distributor and argument as to why their company was the best, in the end we managed to cut it down to 3 different distributors.

BH Productions

Blumhouse Productions is an American film production company mostly known for their production of low-budget horror movies. Blumhouse has produced iconic horror films such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister franchises and closely focuses on the supernatural side of horror films. Blumhouse Productions would be a good distributor for "The Remembering" because they produce low-budget horror films passing them onto bigger companies to distribute them worldwide earning a high gross. Blumhouse specialise in supernatural horror films which is the genre for our film therefore their expert knowledge would benefit us the most and help produce a great film with scariest scenes possible to frighten and grip our audience.

 

 

 

Icon Films

Icon Films is a UK film distributor company who collaborate with local and worldwide companies to help independent films be the best they can be. Icon Films is one of the best film distributors in the UK and have helped distribute top end films such as Paranormal Activity and Transporter 3 and have generated £150million at box office making them a very successful distributor. Icon Films would be a good possible choice of distributor for The Remembering as they successfully distribute small, independent films and lead them on to success and a high gross but have additionally distributed top end films and led them on to success proving that this company is effective and reliable and a good choice of distributor in order to make a successful film. In the end it was Icon Films who we chose as our distributor for The Remembering as the company is a local and individual one which more or less guarantees a high chance of success due to its past and examples of movies that its distributed. Comparing Icon Films to the other companies, whilst BH Productions is a good choice of distributor, it focuses on producing more than distributing and therefore wouldn't be as successful as Icon Films would be in terms of actually distributing the film, not producing.  And in terms of Warner Brothers, this huge conglomerate company would be too big of a company to make them our distributor and wouldn't distribute our film. Instead we should look at smaller, individual companies such as Icon Films as a desired distributor as they are more likely to work with us and can still guarantee a success and high gross.

 

 

 

Warner Brothers

Warner Bros. is an international company and one of the largest television and film companies in the world- and arguable the most known. Warner Bros. additionally works in distributing supernatural horror films and has distributed famous horror films such as The Conjuring and Sinister leading them onto high grosses at box office. Furthermore, Warner Bros. is a huge conglomerate company and have worked with BH Productions on many accounts before and would therefore be a great choice of distributor- whilst Blumhouse could expertly produce The Remembering, Warner Bros. could distribute it across the world increasing it's population and summing up a huge and impressive gross. That alone is one of the reasons why Warner Brothers would be a choice of distributor but secondly the size of this conglomerate would guarantee success and an attraction for worldwide audiences, plus, the money they could spend and smaller companies filling in on improvements would help produce an amazing film and lead The Remembering on to great success.

2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The particular social group we tried to represent were teenagers around the age of 16-18. In order to convey this representation we paid attention to characteristics and costumes that matched the stereotypes of our desired social group. The story of “The Remembering” is centred around a group of close friends; Bree, Carter and Elias (around the ages of 17) who become haunted by their friend Piper who holds a grudge over the group as she blames them for her death.


In our opening sequence, Piper’s ghost begins haunting the group and her entrance is through a stereotypical- teenage party game: ‘Spin the Bottle’, all teenagers have played this party game at least once so to convey the social group we chose this activity and matched it with the film’s sub-genre creating a spooky twist. Furthermore, we used teenage idiolect; such as “Selfie” which further evidenced the desired social group and made a clear representation and with our film being set in modern times we made sure to pay attention to the common colloquial language and popular fashion trends our particular social group say/wear to make our representation as clear as possible. When Tyler, who played Carter, took a selfie we focused the camera on his phone and then cut to the flashback of Piper’s death incorporating a match-on-action edit and a link to the sub-genre. Moreover, for our representation of teens we used the common fact that a teenage friendship group doesn't tend to be too large and they usually associate with their best and closest friends; which is why we used a small character list. In a teenage group their is usually always a leader which is why we gave the character Carter more lines than the other character as we followed the stereotype of the male being the alpha of the group. In their teenage years friends are really close and we hoped to convey the bond in this group in our representation along with the popular fashion trends and games that teens often play at parties.
Within the friendship group there are 2 boys and 1 girls, in our character profiles we decided to describe Elias especially as the more leading and courageous as male’s are stereotyped to be more courageous than women and often take charge, in order to portray fear we used Georgina’s character, Bree, as the one who would be most scared and the stereotypical frightened girl who relied on the male’s for protection. Contrasting to this, when the paranormal events occurred both Carter and Elias, the male friends, were presented as frightened and the stereotypes of the fearless males was broken. The stereotypes of our social groups costumes, characteristics and language helped present a clear representation.
The ghost of Piper is presented in a white dress as she is depicted as innocent due to her death not being her fault. In the scene when Piper is introduced she is stood staring back at the group through the window, during this she is wearing her white dress which is emphasised through the light of the sun making her look faint and light, similar to the representation of a ghost. Moreover, the wind on the day of filming helped represent Piper's ghost as the dress blew in the wind similar to how a ghost's silhouette flickers in horror films and by standing still with the dress blowing around her Piper could be represent as a ghost through the bright white colours (additionally conveying her innocence) and the elegant flicker of her dress like a ghost's spirit.

1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The plot for “The Remembering” is the haunting of Piper against her lifelong friends as she blames them for her death and holds a grudge as her life was taken away from her by her so-called boyfriend Carter. The three friends; Elias, Bree and Carter, have to reach out to Piper’s ghost and seek her forgiveness and escape the haunting. For our opening sequence we wanted to present both the sub-genre and allude the audience to the plot. Our opening sequence contains jump scares, creepy music, unnatural, swift movement and paranormal actions to convey the supernatural sub-genre as well as an eerie flashback which conveys the plot of the film. The ghostly movement and frightening flashback matched with the uncomfortable horror music entices horror fans to see what this begrudging girl has in store for her friends and what more is to come in this creepy storyline. The cast names are painted as a fade over the sequence, this mirrors many modern horror films- and most genres style, and allows to pack more into our opening sequence and make the 2 minutes as enticing as possible. 

The movie The Conjuring 2 also uses a flashback at the beginning of their film to create the movie's setting and plot. Because of this we used our flashback to convey the plot of The Remembering early in the film and to ultimately create an eerie and uncomfortable horror sequence. By comparing The Remembering to other horror films we were able to make our horror film as scary as possible and equally successful.





Furthermore, our title sequence was short but effective, the title faded in through a black screen and flickers like a ghostly silhouette adding mystery and spooks the audience. The opening sequence is non-chronological, and the full movie itself is also, and crosses from the present to the past through the flashbacks giving extra information to the plot and plenty of opportunities to frighten and entice the viewer. Instead of using dark and dim lighting like stereotypical horror films we instead focused on the creepy, horror music to convey the supernatural genre of the film- the music is present throughout the sequence and certain clips such as the burning pamphlet further evidence the sub-genre. 

The movie Insidious also uses a fade for its title sequence so we therefore copied this idea as Insidious is a supernatural horror film and we wanted The Remembering to be as spooky and realistic as possible so by comparing styles to successful horror films we were able to achieve this and make it successful too.






The music and paranormal scenes were intended to frighten the audience but to additionally entice and thrill horror loving audiences (our desired audience). A certain, and uncommon, style of shot we used was the use of hand-holding the camera, we did this for the flashback scenes and to allude the audience that the image is coming from Piper’s perspective.  

The movie Sinister 2 revolves around the use of handheld cameras and includes a lot of their shots through handheld filming. Because of Sinister 2 being a successful and frightening horror film following the same sub-genre we used similar techniques and included handheld filming to create the idea of the shots coming from Piper the ghost's perspective and to make the film more scary and dynamic. The closer attention to the styles and traits used by popular horror films the more likely our film was at being successful.

Post Production Video Questionaire

After we finished the production of the film we did a video questionnaire so that we could see what people thought of the films and whether they would go see the whole film after watching the first two minutes.
We started by asking their ages and what films they were interested in so that we could see if they fit our target audience for the film and if the genre and their favorite films were similar to ours. They were all between the ages of sixteen and seventeen which was perfect for our target audience as it allowed us to look at their answers with the understanding that they were perfect for our target audience.
When we asked about their favorite genre only one of their favorite genres' was horror however this allowed us to look at a wider range of audiences as they weren't all looking at their specific favorite film which was good as not every audience members favorite genre would be horror. This also ties in with their favorite films as only one mentioned the a horror film, 'seven psychopaths' whilst the rest were from various genres.
By asking them how they watched films it allowed us to see the best way that we would want to distribute our films. Three of the five said that they watched films through streaming sites or Netflix which would agree with the distributors that we have been looking at however the other two said that they watched theirs illegally which means that no money would go back to the film as the money wouldn't be coming back through cinemas or the streaming sites.
When asked what they thought about the film they all said it was really good and Izzy, Mitchell and Sophie enjoyed the editing on the film whilst Sophie also enjoyed the quality of the camera that we used for the film. However Theo said their was some improvements to be made which we would take into account if we made the whole film.
They all agreed that the genre was suitable for the film and that the certificate was correct which was perfect as this is what we needed for the film. The most important question was would they watch our film in which they all said that they would. They all said the music and iconography suited horror however when asked about the setting Theo said that the exterior shots would however the interior didn't so we would look at the lighting and the atmosphere of the house scenes to try and make the setting more impact to the horror genre.

When we asked this question in our questionnaire 8 out of the 9 candidates said they would, the 1 member who said they wouldn't justified this by stating that they don't like the horror genre and films so The Remembering wouldn't appeal to them anyway. We took these results on board and concluded that our film was appealing to our target audience and therefore successful.

 

When we asked this question in our questionnaire the majority of responses said yes however some disagreed and said that later on in the film the images may be too scary for audiences aged group.  Another response was that the opening sequence itself didn't contain enough violence of a 12A film however in our plot we had created more paranormal events to occur with violence so in the long run we believed our film was suitable for our audience. After analysing our data we believed our judgement of a certificate was appropriate and would help our film be successful as it would be open for our target audience to view.

 1.     THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is the main setting in the opening sequel of our film. This gives the film a style of realism which makes the creepy appearance of Piper even more frightening. The kitchen has a desktop which we used as a table for the three characters to sit around through the main duration of the first two minutes.

2.     THE RIVER

The river is one of the most important settings in the first two minutes and the whole film. This is where the flashback of Piper’s death occurs. This setting is creepy and eerie as it involves the danger of deep water (in which Piper drowns), the scary reflections of the trees upon the water and a sense of the unknown.

3.     THE WOODLANDS

The woodlands is another setting in the flashback scene involving Piper’s death. Carter is seen dragging Piper up from the river and into the woodlands where she is later photographed by police. The woodlands hold a sense of mystery and the unknown.

4.     THE WINDOW LOOKING OUT TO THE GARDEN

The kitchen overlooks a large window, in which the spirit of dead Piper returns to her friends. We decided to use a window between her and the other three characters to show the barrier between life in the room and death on the outside. The sun also reflects down on the window which creates this sort of ‘glow’ around Piper.

The Remembering

Opening shot is the camera panning photos across a wall in a room. The camera then slowly pans down to a photo frame with a pamphlet next to it revealing it to be from a funeral. The camera then journeys through the house listing the actors in the film. The camera travels through the house and introduces a group of friends hosting a memorial party for their friend who they begin talking about in memory. The group of friends continue their conversation before deciding to take a group selfie to make the anniversary of their friend’s death. The group stand and pose and take the picture. As the camera flashes the scene cuts to the flash of a police report and the photo of a dead body (Piper’s). A montage runs of the police report whilst an audio plays of the police notes. As the police complete their report, a CSI agent prepares a white cover to mask the dead body, as the CSI officer wafts the cover the film cuts back to the memorial and the group are laying out a while cloth for a party game. The group start to play spin the bottle, as they spin the empty bottle the camera captures a dark silhouette pass by the door frame. The group carrying on growing excited over the game whilst an audio of eerie whispers ring through the camera. Creepy music plays as the camera slows down the spinning of the bottle and the group’s smiles and facial expressions are slowed, the film then speeds up and the bottle stops spinning and points out of the room and appears to point at the balcony. The friends look up and the silhouette of Piper’s ghost is stood staring back at them. The friends are shocked in fear and stare blankly unable to move. The lights then flicker off but turn back on to reveal Piper missing, the fiends are shook and hold onto each other frightened at what's just happened. Then all of a sudden shot glasses fall off the table and shatter, amidst the shards of glass one of the friends pick up a note reading ‘My death was because of you’. As one friend reads the note another picks up a photo of Piper with the 4 of them, as she stares at it the sound of glasses echoes around the room, frightened they look at each other for comfort. The friend with the photo then looks back to see it cracked with a silhouette of Piper stood at the opposite end of the room. With a loud ringing of eerie music the title sequence rolls.
